It’s as if the worst parts of ‘About You’ have been extended into a whole song; for the most part, the baritone sax is the only saviour.
While Chronological is a foray into more commercial territory for Caravan Palace, it's clear the material has been assembled with the same level of care and dedication that has seen the Parisian electronic alchemists set themselves apart from their contemporaries. These guys have been making music for over a decade now, and have consistently set the bar for others to try and reach. Read honest and unbiased product reviews from our users. So overall I’m a little torn about this release. If you like sound quality, dynamics and good recording engineering - this album is a sonic masterpiece (as were the others) Caravan Palace has always gone several levels above and beyond what is necessary to capture a track, and their production refinement feels both experimental, and highly professional at the same time. Their fourth album takes another step sideways, … A few days after that first encounter, I found myself replaying the song in my head, and picked up the album the song had come from. While one might expect a bunch of extremely loud, high energy music from an electronic/dance record, each song on the project has a different mood than the last and each one sounds unique.

Tom Bailey (no relation of Eighties behemoths The Thompson Twins) sings on the euphoric finger-clicking “Waterguns” and “About You” is feisty electro-pop with female attitude (“Well, I’m a big girl with cash and wheels/I’m taller than you when I don’t wear heels”), although things do occasionally descend into the cheese department, as on “Supersonics”. Caravan Palace have long been associated with the dance music sub-genre electro-swing (a mash-up of swing jazz and club beats), an easily accessible style reviled by hipsters but enjoyed by multitudes of festival-goers. While there might be a more universal appeal to this album, their genre-defying sound still makes for a mostly immersive listen and a neat addition to any summer playlist. It’s interesting that they’ve included these almost mood-setting tracks, as if they’re setting us up for what’s to follow. I couldn't recommend this enough!!! I've been a hardcore fan of Caravan Palace for going on seven years since the release of their Album 'Panic.' This features a bit more of a familiar CP sound, particularly in the high-pitched group vocals that come in towards the end. This definitely set us up for what was to come, and gave us time to prepare ourselves.
Chronologic represents their fourth album now, and it’s one which has been both highly-anticipated, and greatly-received. In my opinion April has the best vocals and serves as a pretty melodious and sweet finale to the project. It’s understandable that, having been in the game for such a time now, they would want to expand their sound, and actually something that I’d argue most acts should attempt more. The album is certainly something of a departure from what many of us were expecting from the band. Towards the end, I can appreciate the piano solo as well, but overall, this one I was not so keen on. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. The next track is ‘Melancholia’, which unfortunately, does not hit the mark at all. Only one song on the album that is electro swing the rest is considered pop. The first half of this feels like it's aimed at me, and I can't tell if she's being cheeky or what. It’s a brilliant start though, very bluesy, very positive and energetic, and some great use of samples throughout.
Next, the first track that I didn’t already know was ‘Moonshine’, which is very reminiscent of ‘Russian’ off their last album. Get releases to me at leigh.sanders@expressandstar.co.uk. ‘Leena’ is probably the most interesting of all the songs on the release.
Parisian outfit Caravan Palace have now had a career that’s lasted over a decade. Deep, reverberating bass thumps really kick the song up the behind and again turns the final segment into a rip-roaring listen. It’s really bluesy again, really upbeat, and just a great singalong. More dirty confessionals and I'll be back for the next one. I think that Caravan Palace has a bit to work on in terms of their vocals and development of ideas, but conceptually the album has a lot of potential, and it really succeeds at coming together as a whole. Fantastic album!!!
The talent of Caravan Palace is intact, even after four albums. Considering that I have never heard any other Caravan Palace albums, I can’t comment on how this album compares to their music in the past. Below: Watch the video for "Plume" by Caravan Palace. But take a drive through France and surf the airwaves and you'll find many radio stations dedicated to the kind of partly lo-fi, partly euphoric and partly summertime vibes as created here by Caravan Palace.
I first heard of Caravan Palace playing a game called Beat Saber - someone had created a level based on a caravan palace and the level was rated highly so I downloaded it, not knowing a thing about the artist.
