I loved that it was pretty much singing and dancing with just a thin plot driving the movie forward. I did not take for granted that this was, for many of the performers, one of their rare roles of any substance.

As far as I know, its production was not rocky, but this is a film with an almost entirely African-American cast made in 1943. Williamson tells the story of his life among children as a rising star in showbiz.
