Thus, some view Catiline as a reformer such as the Gracchi who met similar resistance from the government. How Did the Political Structure in Rome influence U.S. Historically, the family had been powerful and members had been elected to the consulship to be one of the two men who shared leadership of Rome. Catiline also hoped that he might have an easier battle against Antonius who, he assumed, would fight less determinedly, as he had once been allied with Catiline. This was such a time, and so both Catiline and Fabia were both in genuine peril. This was the area which had rebelled against Rome when Catiline came of age, and which had been denied the rights of citizenship as a result. [17] However, by the time of the consular election for 62 BC, Catiline had lost much of the political support he had enjoyed during the previous year's election.

While history has viewed Catiline through the lenses of his enemies, some modern historians have reassessed Catiline, such as Michael Parenti, in "The Assassination of Julius Caesar". The other consul, C. Antonius, in whom Catiline hoped to find a supporter, was won over and got out of the way by Cicero, who resigned the province of Macedonia in his favour.

The people were on Cicero’s side throughout though, and he was considered thereafter the saviour of Rome. Multiple pages on Roman Gods have been combined into one single page. In 73 BC, he was brought to trial for adultery with the Vestal Virgin, Fabia,[5] who was a half-sister of Cicero's wife, Terentia, but Quintus Lutatius Catulus, the principal leader of the Optimates, testified in his favor, and eventually Catiline was acquitted.[6]. Once again he went on trial, and once again he was found innocent. It was created to provide the people with a direct representative magistrate. Catiline and Quintus Lutatius Catulus, the son of a man who had been prosecuted by Gratidianus and died as a result, conspired to preempt that execution by murdering him – Catalus for revenge, and Catiline to avoid being dragged down with him. Such positions would've undoubtedly been major sources of extortion and greed. Ninety years after Cataline was born the poet Virgil would write the Aeneid, an epic poem that linked the founding of Rome to the Trojan War through the hero Aeneas (who was a Trojan that escaped to Italy). Petreius destroyed the armed mob of Catiline and Manlius, killing Catiline in the process, and the conspiracy was over. As such it is certain that young Catiline was raised with one goal in his life, to attain the consulship.

While Cicero tried to place the blame on Catiline, the author was never found, and it was suggested that the entire concept may have been hatched by Cicero himself as an excuse to prosecute troublemakers. [26] Still other scholarly texts, such as H E Gould and J L Whietely's Macmillan edition of Cicero's In Catilinam, dismiss Catiline as a slightly deranged revolutionary, concerned more with the cancellation of his own debts, accrued in running for so many consulships, and in achieving the status he believed his by birthright due to his family name. [24] Up until the modern era Catiline was equated, as Sallust described, to everything depraved and contrary to both the laws of the gods and men. Typically, Roman prisons were not used to punish criminals, but instead served only to hold people awaiting trial or execution. While that move was suspicious enough regarding Catiline's various involvement in plots, another move by his supporters in Rome was even more damning.

When Catiline was seventeen years old war broke out on the Italian peninsula. He had a different, and more violent, route to power in mind. He suggested that the plot of Sura was different than the reason Cicero was granted a Senatus Consultum Ultimatum, and that the death penalty shouldn't apply.

He and his ill-equipped army began to march towards Gaul and then back towards Rome several times in vain attempts to avoid a battle. Roman Africa was basically what had once been Carthage, before the Romans had destroyed it. He marched north in the hopes of escaping to Gaul, but he found the passes through the Alps blocked by Roman loyalists.
Cicero vehemently opposed the concept in light of the massive corruption of the time.

Catiline was there, but as the speech continued the other senators moved away from him leaving him alone. It is worth noting, though, that few of these accounts mention Catiline, and so Cicero may have exaggerated his role in affairs. After Catiline’s death, many of the poor still regarded him with respect and did not view him as the traitor and villain that Cicero claimed he was. This was a junior magisterial post with responsibility for finance and taxation normally seen as simply a stepping stone to greater things. When this law was vetoed by one of the tribunes (who was part of the Caesar-Crassus party) Cicero gave an impassioned speech in the senate to denounce this undemocratic behaviour. Catiline came third by a narrow margin, but it was enough to deny him his life’s ambition of becoming consul. Now he had no visible enemy. The problem being that our primary sources about him are his mortal enemies. Upon his return to Rome, he sought the Consulship but accusations of provincial mismanagement and a general distrust barred his ability to run.
