Simply, yet beautifully, written and poignant, SOPHIE AND THE RISING SUN -- a narrative, in the plaintive voice of various characters -- takes place in a sleepy southern town in Georgia. This was a book for which I really had no expectations; in fact, I had no idea that it would be centered on WWII, Pearl Harbor, and the star-crossed love between two people whose lot in life was to live a solitary existence.
