Candy stars as Jack Chester, an air traffic controller under alot of stress. The movie is about family and new friends pulling together, working side by side, believing in a dream and achieving an impossible goal.
To this day, I see Scully whenever I see Rip Torn in any movie. As I watched the movie the second time I began to notice the fashion and other artifacts of the time. He and Candy worked so well that it is a shame that they never made another film together. So, he packs off to Florida for a month's vacation with his wife and two kids.
Crenna (First Blood) plays Al Pellet, a wealthy snob who is also a 7-year boat race champion, Torn (Defending Your Life) plays Scully, Captain and restaurant owner of "The Barnacle" and Larroquette (Blind Date) plays Don Moore, a nice guy who befriends The Chesters. The family then misreads the address, moves into the wrong house, and are forced to leave in the middle of the night, ending up in a decrepit shack on a public beach with a constant stream of beach-goers tromping through the place. This movie is from a time that I sorely miss. Considering the current state of our world and the current state of "comedy", almost 10 years after his untimely death, I think we need John Candy now more then ever before. A good cast surrounds him in this film, with Rip Torn contributing much of the comedy as Scully. Great line regarding "The Smurfs.". He uses this time off to take his wife Sandy and children Jennifer, Bobby, and Laurie on a summer vacation from the Atlanta area to the Gulf Coast resort town of Citrus Cove, Florida, where they are beset by a never-ending barrage of problems. I thoroughly enjoy watching this movie every time they show it on Comedy Central or USA or TNT. They even use Axel F and the Footloose theme in their sad attempt to ripoff the Vacation movies. To this effect a house is secured in a Florida resort area. Though this film could easily be classified as a slob comedy, similar to so many that were made during that time, and Candy was prolific as an actor in many of those films, there's one moment in this film where it rises high above the typical slob comedies of it's era. There's no violence, no crude sexual comedy, just the legendary John Candy doing what he did best. BORING! This man was a true comic giant, but he was also a fine actor. With plenty of sunburns, fake boobs, drunken pirates, and frozen fish sticks, this movie is what summer’s all about. Skin cancer be damned, sometimes a guy just needs a good base. The house on the left was occupied by two elderly sisters, one of whom had a 6-foot-4 inch retarded son who was out of Arsenic and Old Lace.

Things were funny on the beach when the spigot from the cooler broke, and Jack gets a Frisbee to the groin.
I guess it is true that some of our greatest comics have tears in their hearts. The movie’s plot eventually centers on his quest to try and prove his worth as a man by winning a sailing contest, but the best parts have nothing to do with sailing. I know this movie it's not the great thing, but i love it, it's remind me of the holidays i have with my family when i was kid, besides John Candy made that any movie be better. The three stars are only because John Candy turned in a very game effort and was actually quite funny, only to be undone by one of the most preposterous plots ever.
