Wished I remembered the Jane Austen books better. They eventually form a society for the preservation of all things Austen. Genres & Themes |  A few that started out looking somewhat dubious later grew on me (like the Sotheby’s estate agent). A charming, lighter Historical Fiction story with an ensemble cast. Great review I LOVE the quotes you chose to share. Yet another novel on the Jane Austen Train.

Likewise, I found little to criticize in Ms. Jenner’s first novel. In the concluding Historical Notes section, the author states, “The people and events described in this book are completely fictional and imaginary; the places are not.” (305) The Jane Austen Society is an engaging story and a love letter to both the places Jane lived and her beloved works of fiction.

One of my favorite characters, Evie Stone, works at the Great House and spends her evenings secretly cataloging the books in the library. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2020, Novel set in CHAWTON, Hampshire (one for fans of Jane Austen!).

It will transport you into the midst of a group of individuals joined together through Austen and at the same time reignite your own passion of all things Austen. The fictional people and events of The Jane Austen Society provide a rich reading experience. “The Jane Austen Society” is no Jane Austen novel; its dialogue is not as crisp, its pace a bit flabby. I also found the characters a bit flat and one dimensional and the format of the story just feels a bit off and awkward, unfortunately this wasn’t one for me.

Jane Austen had used her time here for housework and visits and composing works of genius. Not the kind of book I’m usually drawn to, but to my surprise, I loved the characters and how th story evolved. The writer has researched well her historical material about British village life while usefully using her deep knowledge of the Austen novels.

I sometimes thought I was a bit old-fashioned in my love for Jane Austen‘s novels, but this book makes me feel I am part of the Legion! It’s a comfort to see that no matter how difficult circumstances seem there will be a satisfactory ending. She had watched Miss Frances float through that world like a ghost, and Adam Berwick sit alone atop his old hay wagon, and Dr. Gray walk through town with that strange faraway look in his eyes, as if he were looking past reality, past pain, to a kinder, gentler world. This is a lovely, gently and slow paced tale with lots of references to Jane Austen’s books and characters.

The members of the Jane Austen Society are tested in their resolve to remain true to their mission and each other. A delight. All of the characters are dealing with loss in some way, from the widower to the war widow to the spinster. What attracted me to it is of course was the title when I saw it on the grocery store shelf, not a bookstore, and a pleasant surprise to find it’s a Canadian author. Great review!

Even with a large cast of characters, they were still all very well developed and had enjoyable storylines. The Jane Austen Society takes place following the second World War. I’m really looking forward to reading this book! Jenner does an excellent job at depicting the chaos that comes with trying to piece together your life after such a devastating event. I love novels based in historic settings and especially love Jane Austen, so I naturally I was excited when my book club decided to crack into this one. The Jane Austen Society This delightful name-dropping book was made doubly so by the many Austen characters referred to, mentioned, and even comparisons made with the fictional characters of this tale. These people-a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others-could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. – Scuffed Slippers and Wormy Books. I particularly liked the thoughtful referencing to scenes in the various Austen novels.
