I’m sure there are plenty of books with this subject matter but I think this is a particularly excellent one. It was amazing and I really appreciated her capturing the diversity of the family not just in the parents, but also in the children. In the back of the book in the author biography section (where I finally see a photo of her) it reveals that Polacco wrote this book specifically for children she met during her speaking engagements at schools, children from untraditional families, because she saw the need for a book such as this. Most of all, the care and attention of two very different mothers filled the children's lives with love. It's a little long and wordy for small children, but for kids who relate, it would probably be fantastic. Marmee, Meema, and the kids are just like any other family on the block. Richard Burton was the first choice to play Charlie, but it was thought that his fee would push the budget too high, so Bogarde was eventually cast in the role instead. He most famously essayed these subjects in The Innocents, his acclaimed adaptation of Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw", and he returned to it in the 1980s with his screen adaptation of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983).

Patricia Polacco has many wonderful books to her credit, this one is no exception. The children's secret world begins to change when Jiminee brings home Louis, a friend from his school, and allows him to hide there.
